Aquatic plant growth is an important element in completing the aquatic ecosystem of our lakes and ponds. Retention ponds have become a very important part of preventing flooding in our subdivisions, streets and our homes.

Our lakes and ponds have become over loaded with high levels of nutrients due to erosion, runoff, fertilizers, duck waste, and decomposing plant life. All these components accelerate aquatic weed and algae growth. To achieve success in controlling aquatic plant growth, you must implement an integrated management program that combines all the management tools that are available to you.

The first step you must achieve is: correct plant identification.
The second step is: what corrective methods are available to me, and what am I capable of doing myself?

Here are some of the methods available today:
  • Preventive Control - reduce nutrients from entering your watershed, stop fertilizing near the water, plant native plants on the shoreline to reduce nutrient inflow, add aeration to reduce organic buildup and reduce anaerobic conditions.
  • Mechanical Conrol - hand pulling, raking and harvesting the weeks and algae.
  • Cultural Control - riprap shoreline, winter drawn downs, increase water depth, aquatic pond dyes.
  • Bilogical Control - introduction or enhance the production of organisms, add (sterile) grass carp and beetles.
  • Chemical Control - the use of aquatic herbicides and algaecides to control weeds and algae.
